Chennai: The country’s first walkalator (horizontal escalator) inside an airport opened for passenger use at the international arrival and departure terminals of Chennai airport on Saturday.
The conveyor belt that transports people to the aircraft will reduce the distance they have to walk inside the terminals.
Similarly, passengers who arrived by an Air India Kuwait-Chennai flight first used
the walkalator at the arrival terminal.
“The remaining units of the walkalators will be ready in two months. When they are completed, the walkalators will connect bay 30 to bay 28,” said airport director K Natarajan.
The facility is being installed at a cost of Rs 7 crore, as part of efforts to enhance passenger amenities and optimise use of infrastructure in the airport. There are five aerobridges in the international terminal and three in the domestic terminal.
