Chennai: For 24-year-old Kanchana, a part of the Madras Moore Market complex (MMC) railway station turned into a labour room, where she delivered a baby boy, amid a cordon created by Railway Protection Force personnel on Wednesday. This is the second such delivery in two days. On Tuesday, a 22-year-old woman delivered a girl in a suburban train on way to the MMC station. Kanchana had come to the MMC station from Tiruvallur to go to the Institute of Child Health, Egmore, along with two of her relatives, when she developed labour pains. Metal barricades used for crowd control were put together to prepare a makeshift labour room where RPF lady constables, a railway doctor and a nurse attended to the young mother. Though maximum privacy was ensured for the woman, the RPF had a tough time controlling the crowd. An RPF guard spotted a pregnant Kanchana showing signs of delivering the baby as soon as she alighted from a suburban train at 12.40 pm. The guard informed the station master . Railway officials attended to Kanchana and found that there was no time to move her to a hospital, said a senior railway official. RPF personnel put together metal barricades and made an enclosure in a secluded part of the railway station, near an elevator used only by employees. Medical kits available with the railway station and RPF were used. A nurse who came along with an ambulance and a couple of lady constables of RPF assisted the doctor. “The delivery was without any complication and the baby and the mother are in good health,” the official said. Dr Shailesh, deputy chief medical director, Southern Railway, attended to the patient. He said the delivery was over before he reached the spot and everybody was waiting for him to cut the umbilical cord. The woman and baby are doing well, he added.
